Is an ADHD Evaluation Right for Me?

Adults seek ADHD evaluations for many different reasons. You may have wondered about ADHD for years, recently begun recognizing patterns in yourself, or found that strategies that once worked are no longer enough.

An evaluation may be helpful if you experience:

  • Difficulty focusing, starting tasks, or following through

  • Chronic procrastination or feeling overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities

  • Problems with organization, time management, or remembering important things

  • Restlessness, impulsivity, or difficulty slowing down

  • Patterns of difficulty at work, school, home, or in relationships

  • A history of anxiety, depression, or trauma that makes it difficult to understand what is causing your symptoms

  • Questions about a previous ADHD diagnosis or whether ADHD may better explain lifelong patterns

You do not need to be certain that you have ADHD before requesting an evaluation. The purpose of the evaluation is to understand the whole picture, including whether ADHD—or another explanation—best accounts for your experiences.

What’s Included in Your Evaluation?

A comprehensive ADHD evaluation looks beyond a checklist of symptoms. We’ll explore how attention and executive functioning show up across your life while also considering other experiences or conditions that can look similar to ADHD.

Clinical & Developmental Interview
Explore your current concerns, developmental history, childhood experiences, education, work, relationships, and patterns across your life.

ADHD & Executive Functioning Assessment
Structured interviews and standardized measures examine attention, organization, time management, impulsivity, emotional regulation, and other areas of executive functioning.

Impact on Daily Life
Explore how symptoms affect work, school, relationships, responsibilities, self-care, and other areas of everyday functioning.

Whole-Person Diagnostic Review
Consider anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep, substance use, medical factors, and other experiences that may contribute to or overlap with ADHD symptoms.

Collateral & Records When Helpful
With your permission, information from someone who knows you well or relevant historical records may be incorporated when available.

Written Report & Feedback
Receive a written evaluation report along with a dedicated feedback appointment to review the findings, diagnostic conclusions, and individualized recommendations.

The goal isn't simply to answer “Do I have ADHD?”—it's to help you better understand your patterns and what may help moving forward.

What to Expect

Your evaluation takes place across three appointments, allowing time to understand your history, complete the assessment, carefully integrate the findings, and talk through your results together.

1. Intake Evaluation

60 minutes

We’ll discuss your concerns, history, current functioning, and what you hope to better understand through the evaluation. You’ll also complete questionnaires and background information as part of this process.

2. Assessment

2 hours

We’ll complete a structured ADHD assessment and explore attention, executive functioning, daily-life impact, developmental patterns, and other factors relevant to diagnostic clarification.

After this appointment, I’ll review and integrate the information gathered, score assessment measures, consider relevant differential diagnoses, and prepare your written report.

3. Results & Feedback

60 minutes

We’ll review your results together, discuss whether the findings support an ADHD diagnosis, and talk through recommendations and practical next steps. You’ll also receive your written evaluation report.

Approximately 4 hours of appointment time + comprehensive scoring, clinical integration, and report preparation.

Understanding Your Results

An ADHD evaluation isn't about trying to prove or disprove a diagnosis. It's about developing a clearer understanding of your experiences, patterns, strengths, and areas of difficulty.

Your evaluation brings together your developmental history, current symptoms, daily functioning, standardized assessment results, and other relevant information to determine whether ADHD best explains the difficulties you're experiencing.

Regardless of the diagnostic outcome, you'll receive feedback about what we learned and individualized recommendations for next steps.

Your evaluation may find that:

ADHD is supported
Your history, symptoms, and functional difficulties are consistent with an ADHD diagnosis.

Another explanation better fits
Sometimes difficulties with attention, motivation, memory, or executive functioning are better explained by factors such as anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep difficulties, substance use, medical concerns, or other conditions.

More than one factor is involved
ADHD can occur alongside other mental health concerns. When appropriate, the evaluation considers how different factors may be interacting.

Additional evaluation may be helpful
Occasionally, the findings suggest that another type of specialized assessment or medical evaluation would provide important additional information.

Your recommendations may include: medication consultation with a medical provider, ADHD-informed therapy, executive-function supports or coaching, workplace or educational supports, medical follow-up, or additional specialized assessment when appropriate.

Therapy is not required after your evaluation. When services outside the scope of the evaluation are recommended, appropriate referrals can be discussed.

Meet Your Evaluator

Jaclyn Johnson,

MA, LPCC, LPC-MH, LADC

I’m a licensed mental health counselor with experience helping adults understand the ways trauma, anxiety, depression, life experiences, and patterns of coping can affect how they feel and function.

My approach to ADHD evaluation is collaborative, trauma-informed, and focused on understanding the whole person—not simply adding up symptoms on a checklist. I take time to consider developmental history, executive functioning, daily-life impact, mental health, strengths, and other factors that may contribute to the difficulties you’re experiencing. My clinical background in trauma and complex mental health concerns also informs careful consideration of symptoms that can overlap with or resemble ADHD.

My goal is for you to leave the evaluation with more than a diagnostic answer. I want you to have a clearer understanding of yourself, language for what you’ve been experiencing, and practical direction for what comes next.
